This piece is a critique of the morbid beauty standards in Asia nowadays. The pale, thin and youthful looking is deemed as the most attractive in Asian pop culture, detrimental to young girls’ self-perception and mental health, and could result in eating disorders and even self-harm. The triptych presents three girls —although being labelled beautiful by the conventional standard—rebelling against said norms. The pale girl had “tainted” her snow-white skin with black ink. The thin girl accentuated her skeletal features with skull earrings. The youthful girl had made multiple piercings on her ears, brow, and lip. This juxtaposition between the popular and unfashionable forms of aesthetics implies that beauty should be diversified, and should not be catered to the taste of certain cultures or trends.
