Depression is one of the most common forms of mental disorder; over 16% of the world's population have experienced depression at some point in their life. This painting is a wish for them, to overcome depression and see the iridescent world again.
The painting is composed of three main elements: multicolored flowers, the sketched hand and face, and the black "curtain". It presents a victim of depression tearing down the dark cover that they are trapped in and emerging from the bright flowers, symbolizing the liberation of oppressed joy.
Furthermore, it can be interpreted as a patient opening the black curtain that was previously blocking out the light and hope. And is finally able to perceive the wonders and the colors of this world again. I chose to use lines to demonstrate the texture of the skin because it shows the roughness and distress that a person goes through while experiencing depression. The bright color of the flowers juxtaposes with the black fabric and the monotone shin, embodying the contrast between happiness and melancholy. Thus, it reveals how difficult it is to overcome depression, as well as the wondrous rewards that one will gain once they did.
